background

Afzeria Africana and Shea nut trees found in Northern Uganda, Southern Sudan and Eastern Congo are pillars of the Nile River Basin Ecosystem. The region is regarded as a blend of savannah grassland tropical forests with draught resistant trees and together with some other species, the trees form the core of the region’s ecology. The indigenous communities consider Sheanut trees to be a ‘gift from ancestors’; and it’s an abomination to cut down a Shea nut tree. It produces Shea oil which has a lot of nutritional and health benefits, yet due to demand for charcoal, the specie is now a target of charcoal makers who have no regard for local customs.  The pro-environment taboo is losing its relevance and legitimacy due to influx of loggers and charcoal burning groups from other parts of the country and refugees from other nations. The sole motivation of cutting trees is short term economic gain. Shea oil is both edible and has curative properties and therefore used for herbal medicine. Economically, it is more gainful to utilize the trees for production of shea oil and shea butter than charcoal. The latter involves a process and the youth who cut these trees all they need is immediate money.

Bio- Remediation intervention therefore seeks to address the environment damage through honey production where Bee- Keeping is used as a silver bullet to end rampant ill practices that lead to environmental damage. The model would also address poverty, dependence on bio-mass as a source of energy and knowledge deficit that exacerbates environmental degradation.

The market driven conservation model we pursue is modular, exponentially incremental and profitable. Pillared on understanding of the community needs and markets; the project can be self-sustaining, environmentally proactive and self-regenerating. West Nile region produces one of the best honeys in the world due to shrubs and tree species in the area, good quality honey would thrive in the marketplace once appropriately positioned.
